Post-Hurricane Laura Safety Tips
As a company based in the Gulf Coast, we know that recovery after a hurricane (or any natural disaster) can be extremely challenging. Below are a few important reminders to help minimize health and environmental dangers if you and/or your facility were in Hurricane Laura’s path:
- Report suspected spills, contamination, and/or environmental violations to the appropriate agency – if reportable releases occur, they should be reported upon constructive knowledge of the occurrence.
- If you have any questions about the condition of your air pollution control equipment – call an expert for an inspection. The outside appearance of certain systems can appear undisturbed, hiding potential issues within. It is always better to be safe than sorry!
- Limit contact with floodwater, which may contain high levels of hazardous substances.
- Limit mold by removing standing water and drying indoor areas as soon as possible.
- Never enter a damaged building unless it has been deemed safe by authorities.
- Avoid loose, dangling, and/or fallen power lines.
- Manage debris – deposit hurricane-related debris to the appropriate location (see EPA’s website for details).
- Take photos and video of any damage as documentation for insurance purposes.
- Continue to follow safe COVID-19 precautions and procedures, including regular hand-washing.
